“SERVING YOU” is the new slogan from this cruise line.  Rick Sasso, president of MSC notes that while social media is important, the human relationship is where MSC would like to focus.  From the CEO to the staff in the offices to the on board employees, they want to take service to a new level.  There is a commitment to hiring individuals to support the travel partners and they are ‘shoring’ up new executive talents. Beginning with the Davina and branching out to all of their ships as well as their new ships, there will be a concentration on bringing the Italian ship sensibility with the expectations of an English speaking consumer.

Ken Muskat, Executive VP of Sales, marketing, PR and guest services spoke  about a 20 city bus tour promoting the new sales force and they will have a strong presence in the state of Florida. Of note is a FIAT Cabrio convertible give-away to one lucky travel partner and one guest. Details of this will be on their website. Other new offerings will be opportunities for destinations legal weddings at various Caribbean ports starting August 2nd and an expansion of the fleet.  Others with highlighted executive positions include Rick Cazzell VP trade support and guest services and Jim Henwood, SVP, hotel ops and group services.

This was hands down the most memorable meal of the trip.  Even though this is a bakery café and it was “only breakfast”  it was so fabulous it deserves that distinction.  Located in the Plateau area we walked into this warm and inviting bakery with just a few tables. We ordered cappuccinos, almond croissants and a butternut squash soup that was absolutely dreamy.  The friendliness of the staff and the congenial nature of the patrons made for a lovely morning.   Tip:  If the say you have to wait 10 minutes for the almond croissants do it!  They come out warm and fresh and worth the wait.  For more on Quebec  -see www.ftlauderdalenews.com

One of the nicest surprises of our trip to Quebec was Mauricie National Park and the vistas of fall colors which turned early this year (2013). Approximately 15 minutes from Shawinigan, we drove in and around the loop, stopping at several hiking areas. An easy yet lovely hike is the Cascades, taking you very close to running streams and waterfalls. Plan for a full day if you take it slow with time to appreciate the natural wonders. CLIA’s CRUISE3SIXTY HAILED A SUCCESS WITH STRONG FOCUS ON AGENTS, GLOBALIZATION AND INDUSTRY RESILIENCY

FORT LAUDERDALE, July 10, 2013 – Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) 9th annual cruise3sixty conference solidified its reputation as the world’s most successful cruise-focused travel agent conference.

Held for the second time at the Vancouver Convention Centre, cruise3sixty drew more than 1,950 total delegates including 1,250 registered agents from North America plus international representation, including a contingent of 40 from Australia.

The conference theme, “Taking Your Business to the Next Level,” was reinforced by a comprehensive series of educational seminars, three days of general sessions featuring industry leaders and special speakers, a two-day trade show with more than 250 exhibitors, 10 ships available for inspection and the CLIA Specialty Cruise Collection Showcase. Participants could choose from 20 CLIA professional development seminars, each of which earned them credits toward CLIA certification.

Christine Duffy, CLIA’s President and CEO, underscored the resiliency of the global cruise industry in her opening remarks, citing a 125% increase from 7.2 million passengers carried in 2000 to a projected 21 million passengers for 2013. Trends driving that growth, according to Duffy, include global itineraries, exotic ports of call, big brand entertainment, and innovation in product and onboard technology. “No other segment of the travel industry demonstrates year in and year out that it understands and anticipates the consumer as well as the cruise industry,” said Duffy.

The globalization of cruising and the CLIA brand, with 12 associations operating under a unified structure around the world, also was highlighted by Duffy. “Consumers are becoming increasingly global – both in where they are from and in the breadth of what they want to experience. Because we are now global, CLIA member agents can look forward to sharing and learning best practices from fellow members around the world.”

Stressing CLIA’s unwavering commitment to its travel agent members, Duffy announced seven new seminars debuting at cruise3sixty as well as the redesign of all 38 CLIA training courses to better reflect the type of training agents require and are looking for today.

Following Duffy’s address, American Express Travel released the details of a survey which found 85% of American Express’ polled travel representatives are experiencing strong cruise sales in 2013.

“The great news about this industry is there is a cruise experience for everyone — from the launch of new ‘mega-ships’ to the increased popularity of river cruising,” said Tony Gonchar, vice president of American Express Travel’s Representative Network.

Also during the opening day general session, “Taking Your Business to the Next Level,” a panel of cruise line executives discussed the importance of travel agents to the global growth of cruising, citing this along with the wide range of cruise experiences available at any price point as being key to allowing the industry to thrive.

RESTAURANT REVIEW – CASA FRIDA- FORT LAUDERDALE

We were recommended to visit to this restaurant, opened in 2012 and hailed to have reasonably priced, authentic Mexican cuisine. Casa Frida is in an unassuming strip mall north of Commercial Boulevard on Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant itself is charming small and cozy with lively conversation and music in the background. The owner tells you the specials, although he is distracted as he watches everything going on in the restaurant at the same time he is talking and seems to have some difficulty multitasking.

The food had varied reviews from the party of six we were with. Personally, I liked the house margarita with orange juice and lime flavors, all very refreshing in flavor. They made a point to tell us there is no packaged flavoring in these cocktails. Others in our party preferred a traditional Margarita, preservatives and all. In terms of the food, the Guacamole and black bean appetizer (two separate dishes) were very good. For entrees, several had the fresh seafood sampler with a tomato based sauce. Mostly yummy, but the small scallops had a bland taste and did not add to the dishes’ appeal. The fish special with mole sauce was excellent along with mashed potato and corn, Mexican style. One at our table seemed frustrated that the tuna portion was served mostly raw and while that would please some, he wanted it cooked through and through, sending it back three times. Our taco lover was not impressed as he felt it was a bland presentation and not to par with other casual Mexican restaurants.

Another point worth noting is once we were almost finished with our meal, there was an awareness that they wanted the table for the next party. If you are expecting to dawdle over your table conversation, this may not be encouraged. This comment is not to take away from the pleasant waitress and general wait staff. Thus, we were mixed and while it appears some of the dishes were very good, others could use better attention. We would be willing to try it, keeping in mind reservations are a must.
